The best relationship advice I've ever received

Here it is:

Relationships only work when the people in them want to be there.
It only takes one of them to end it.

Sit with it for a second. It's the best relationship advice you'll ever get.
It seems simple and obvious on the surface, but there's so much more to unpack past the first glance.

At first glance, you might read it as "you can't force anyone to stay in a relationship."
That's true — but the wisdom in that little nugget goes so much further.
To me it dictates the reason I should always want to keep trying to make my partners happy.

It's actually simple logic at its core:

  • I can't make anyone choose anything.
  • I want my partners to choose to be here.
  • I can help make their choices worthwhile.

It highlights that relationships take effort.
But what does that really mean?

It's not about the effort of putting up with people.
It's about the effort of making yourself the best version of you — so that others choose to be there.
That's the key.

And once you see it that way, it becomes a mirror.

If you want kindness, be kind.
If you want respect, give it.
If you want someone who loves deeply, be willing to love deeply yourself.
If you want vulnerability, go first.

Be someone worth choosing. Not by changing who you are — by being more of who you already are at your best.
